| Sammendrag: | This anthology is an introduction to the many-faceted relationship between music – classical, popular and folk music – and nationalism in the Nordic countries in the years 1750–2000. The authors from Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland consider, on the one hand, music as a contribution to nationalism and, on the other hand, music as a reflection of nationalism.
One of the main points of the article is that the musical nationalism from the beginning was often unintended and was only later made »national« by means of the assessments and acknowledgements of critics and the public.
Another point is that nationalism and music is not solely a nineteenth century phenomenon; the years after 1945 have also witnessed new forms of national music, especially popular music suggesting that the relationship between these two aspects is in a state of continuous development. |
